What are implants? What does it involve?

An implant is an entirely false root constructed of titanium, which sits in the jaw replacing anything from one tooth to several or even replacing the entire set.

Why are implants needed?

There are alternatives to implants. Fixed bridgework (where a false tooth is suspended between crowns on either side of a space) and dentures are alternatives to implants. However bridgework involves trimming down other teeth, and dentures are not always practical, and in any event are only about 20% as good as the natural teeth.

Does it hurt?

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, and we can arrange for sedation for particularly anxious patients. The procedure is actually really fairly straightforward. We use local anaesthetic, lift a small section of gum and insert the implant. The implant is then left in place for a few weeks to integrate with the jaw bone (osseointegrate), and by then the technician will have completed the work that fits on top. The patient is left with a temporary crown or denture in the interim.

How does it work?

The implant fixes into the jaw, and bone grows into and around the implant, leaving it permanently fixed to the patient.

At Gentle Dental, we have introduced a new type of implant, not generally available in the U.K. Traditionally implants have had to be left for up to six months to integrate, but this type of implant can usually be used in 10 days to two weeks.

A small incision is made in the gum, and the implant is screwed into a space made in the jaw. Impressions would then be taken to allow the top section to be produced.

What will my tooth look like after treatment?

Just like a normal tooth!

Are there any contra - indications?

Studies have shown that there may be a lower success rate in smokers and diabetics, but generally between 90 and 95% of implants are successful first time.

Is it expensive?

As every case is different, we would suggest that you come in to see our specialist to discuss what would be appropriate. An opinion on your suitability is available for just £15, although you would need a full examination, x-rays and possibly plaster models if you decide to go ahead.

Single tooth implants are available from around £1,650, and all cases will receive a written quotation as part of the initial examination. Two implants however may be all that is required to stabilise a denture that has previously been unacceptably loose.

What follow up care am I likely to need?

Implants, just like normal teeth need to be kept clean. We do like to see patients at a maximum of six monthly intervals in order to inspect and check the sub and superstructure.
