Services Dentures

What are dentures?

A denture is an artificial replacement for missing teeth. Dentures are removable by the patient, and they can range from just one or two teeth up to a full set. Generally the base plate is made either of acrylic or metal (cobalt-chrome).

Why are dentures needed?

Usually the primary reason for the provision of dentures is for appearance. Well made dentures should also allow for improved chewing of and enjoyment of food.

Do they hurt?

No. Although they can take some time to get used to and may need adjusting from time to time as the mouth slowly changes shape.

How do they work?

Partial dentures will usually clip to or fit in-between existing teeth. Full dentures rely on their shape, the ability of the patients oral musculature to control the denture and on a degree of suction between the fitting surface and the roof or floor of the mouth. Full lower dentures are the most difficult to use, because they tend to encroach on the space occupied by the tongue.

Will they be as good as my natural teeth?

Absolutely not. Partial dentures can be almost as good, but full dentures are only about 20% as good as the natural dentition. If you want teeth like they were before, you need implants.

What does it involve?

Several visits are usually needed to produce the denture, involving visits for refining impressions, to check the colour and the shape and occasionally for adjustments.

How long does it take?

Usually it will take five or six weeks, but in emergencies it can be done much more quickly

What will my teeth look like after treatment?

Like your old teeth (or better!). We have two different standards of denture. Our basic standard are good quality strong teeth that perform well. The deluxe teeth are more natural, but cost about 20% more.

Are there any contra-indications?

If you are having teeth fitted immediately after losing a tooth or teeth, it is important to remember that your mouth will change shape quite quickly following the extractions. Usually a second denture will be needed after about six months in this case.

What problems can I expect?

Adjustments are sometimes necessary. Some disturbance in speech is common in the first few days. It is important not to be too ambitious in the first instance and to concentrate on getting used to the denture before tackling the more difficult foodstuffs. About 1% of the population cannot tolerate dentures.

What is the difference between metal dentures and plastic ones?

The metal dentures are much thinner, a tighter fit and smaller. We would compare wellington boots compared to comfortable training shoes as an appropriate analogy.

Is it expensive?

Single tooth dentures start at £230. We always quote patients for this type of procedure.

Where can this treatment be obtained?

We are happy to provide dentures at Gentle Dental.
