Aromatherapy is the controlled use of essential oils extracted from plants, to promote and maintain a balance of both the body and mind. Originally popular amongst the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, many of the original oils have found use as medicinal products in use up to current time. Research continues, much of it in France, into the applications and biochemical effects of these plant extracts.
Here at Gentle Dental, we see the provision of an Aromatherapy Service as an adjunct to the various methods of relaxation and stress control available for making your visit as pleasant as possible.
Essential Oils have been used to help relieve a wide range of common problems:
emotional problems e.g. insomnia, mental fatigue, stress related anxiety
skin conditions e.g eczema, dermatitis, acne
respiratory problems e.g. asthma, cold and flu symptoms
muscular problems e.g. cramp, rheumatism and arthritis
digestive complaints e.g. heartburn, constipation, nausea
circulatory problems e.g. cellulite, fluid retention
gynaecological problems e.g. PMT, cystitis, menstrual pain
A good therapist will always take a very detailed medical history and build up a thorough picture of each client's lifestyle in order to maximise the benefits of aromatherapy treatment. Where appropriate, the client's GP may be contacted. Advice on diet may also be given.
Certain essential oils may be hazardous in some conditions and it is always advisable to contact a fully qualified aromatherapist if you have any queries at all with regard to dosage or oil type.
An aromatherapy treatment is usually carried out through massage, but oils for home use may be prepared by therapist for specific conditions.
Currently, where stress related problems are commonplace, aromatherapy is invaluable in its ability to help promote relaxation. It is all too often that high stress level and a person's emotional state result in adverse physical symptoms. It would certainly be more beneficial to treat complementary therapies as a preventative treatment rather than a palliative one.
Points to observe:
always buy oils from a reputable supplier who is able to state that oils are 100% pure
never use an essential oil directly on the skin
never take essential oils internally, unless under the strict guidance of a qualified therapist
keep essential oils away from the eyes
keep essential oils out of the reach of children
